Samsung has settled into a predictable cadence in the last few years — S-series smartphones in the spring and foldables in the fall. We are expecting to see the company’s 2022 foldables revealed at the upcoming Unpacked event on August 10th, but there’s less to reveal after the latest leak. We now have what appear to be official renders of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 smartphone. If you’ve seen the Flip3, you’ll know what to expect.

While we might see more foldable and rollable form factors in the future, there are really only two designs in the market right now: flip phone and tablet. The Fold3 is an example of the latter, expanding into a small tablet when you pop it open. When closed, it’s a nominally pocketable smartphone. The Flip3 is a flip phone with a large internal foldable OLED and a small external “cover display.” The new renders, courtesy of noted leaker OnLeaks and GizNext, show the Fold4 looking very much like its predecessor.

The Flip4 in the renders appears to have the same shape and proportions as the Flip3 — even the size and shape of the three glass panels on the exterior look the same. The cover display is not illuminated in the images, but you can make out the outline if you look closely in the black section. It appears to be roughly the same size and ratio as the Flip3. Inside, the Flip4 has a very tall foldable OLED panel. There are also still just two cameras on the back, but you can use them as selfie shooters when the phone is closed.

Perhaps the most notable thing we can learn from the leaked renders is the selection of colors. The Fold4 will come in Graphite, Pink Gold, Bora Purple, and Blue. Sadly, the cream color from the Flip3 is nowhere to be found. The green colorway is also gone, replaced with a more mainstream blue. Samsung offered a “Bespoke Edition” Flip3 that allowed buyers to mix and match colors to create a custom design. It’s unclear if that will be an option for the Flip4 at launch (or at all).

The renders don’t make this clear, but we can only assume the Flip4 will have upgraded internals for 2022. That means a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor and the latest 5G bands. The Flip3 retailed for $999, a drop of several hundred dollars from the previous model. I wouldn’t expect a similarly large drop for this one — Samsung is reportedly working on a mid-range foldable that will debut in 2024.
